MARKET NIGHT + FILM DISCUSSION "MEMORIES." For those who don't wish to buy and sell or who get their trading done early, there also will be a film and discussion night. This time it is anime, with a screening of the 1995 anthology feature MEMORIES. The stories featured were all adapted from comics stories by Katsuhiro Otomo, the creator of AKIRA - he also produced MEMORIES and directed one of the episodes. In fitting with Friday's date, the story themes are all sf-horror, but are quite different in tone. MAGNETIC ROSE is a richly romantic tale of spooks in a sf setting. STINK BOMB is a science-gone-mad story full of black humour. Due to the Club's chronic difficulties with late finishes, we propose only to screen these two on Friday. Come along and enjoy. Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School Melbourne From humble beginnings… Dr. Sketchy’s is the little Brooklyn event that became a movement. Founded in December 2005 by artist, model, and burlesque performer Molly Crabapple. Tired of the sterile buttoned-up art classes she posed for, Molly envisioned a life-drawing class that was decadent, joyful, relaxed with stellar treatment for models and fun for all. Present day… Dr Sketchy’s Melbourne is the first International and longest running Dr Sketchy’s branch outside of the New York HQ we are about to turn 4 and continues to flourish. And now Melbourne’s 4th birthday approaches this July. 8PM. APOLLO: ATMOSPHERES and SOUNDTRACKS. It goes like this: The Criterion Collection is noted for getting the best films and documentaries onto DVD. On Friday night we are showing one of the Criterion Collection DVDs. It is 'For All Mankind' It covers the Apollo space program. It was the inspiration for Ron Howard's Apollo 13 film. The soundtrack is by Brian Eno, ubermeister musician and popular culture god. He felt that too much space programme footage was accompanied by classical music - a legacy of 2001: A Space Odyssey, methinks - and so he composed an ambient music soundtrack for the documentary. It's been available for many years as 'Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks' (1983) and is rated 4 1/2 stars on allmusic.com. This is the same Brian Eno who decorated the Sydney Opera House with light sculptures last year, did the sound treatments for Roxy Music, produced U2's best music, made Talking Heads a worldwide success, invented ambient music, created the Windows sound, and urinated in Duchamp's famous artwork. Reviews: An exquisite experiment, Apollo takes Brian Eno's spacescapes from albums like Another Green World and arranges them with some heavenly pedal steel guitar by Daniel Lanois. The recording engulfs the listener and captures the feel of space travel, weightlessness, and other sensations vividly. It's also perhaps Eno's warmest record ever. This documentary utilizes the official film footage taken by NASA and the astronauts during various Apollo missions. The footage was blown up to 35mm without a loss of visual quality. Director Al Reinert has done an excellent job of assembling a coherent documentary from all the available material. The narration includes the actual voices and words of the astronauts themselves. One reviewer called this "the most expensive film ever made," referring to the many billions of dollars that went into the moon landing program. This footage was extensively mined by Ron Howard for his (Apollo 13, so it may seem familiar.) For All Mankind features a score by experimental rock composer Brian Eno. Due to the enactment of martial law, the work remained unperformed until 1987. The Miserere stands alongside the Third Symphony as one of Górecki's most potent and emotionally charged scores. Francis Poulenc's Figure Humaine, composed during the Second World War, is a hymn to freedom from occupied France. Using the Gregorian plainsong as a starting point, Josquin's Missa Pange Lingua is one of the composer's last works: music of noble assurance and mystic calm. Sunday 6 June 2010 at 2:30pm. |

| 19 May | Wed | Refugees, Racism & the Politics of Fear: Rebuilding the Refugee Rights Movement Speakers: 6.30pm, Wednesday May 19th. Rudd went to the 2007 election with the promise of a humane refugee policy. He did so because the refugee rights movement that emerged in the Howard years became powerful enough to influence politics in Australia. Labor’s decision to suspend processing new refugees arriving by boat from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka is a continuation of the previous Howard Government’s racist refugee policies. Both major parties are scape-goating refugees to distract attention from their neoliberal policies. All welcome for this important discussion. | 22 April | Thu | GREEN RENTERS present "NO IMPACT
MAN." A guilty liberal finally snaps, swears off plastic, goes organic, becomes a bicycle nut, turns off his power and generally becomes a tree-hugging lunatic who tries to save the polar bears and the rest of the planet from environmental catastrophe while dragging his baby daughter and Prada-wearing, Four Seasons-loving wife along for the ride. And that’s just the beginning. Bill McKibben meets Bill Bryson in this seriously engaging look at one man’s decision to put his money where his mouth is and go off the grid for one year -while still living in New York City – to see if it’s possible to make no net impact on the environment. In other words, no trash, no toxins in the water, no elevators, no subway, no products in packaging, no air-conditioning, no television…. What would it be like to try to live a no-impact lifestyle? Is it possible? Could it catch on? Is living this way more satisfying or less satisfying? Harder or easier? Is it worthwhile or senseless? These are the questions at the heart of this whole mad endeavor, through which Colin Beavan hopes to explain to the rest of us how we can realistically live a more “eco-effective”and, by turns, more content life in an age of inconvenient truths. Join Green Renters with scrumptious sustainable beer, wine and nibbles in Donkey Wheel's beautiful historic basement to enjoy a film that shows important and serious messages can still be fun! April 22nd, 6.30pm, screening starts 7pm RSVP via Eventbrite Facebook event 0433 584 889 / contact@greenrenters.org Green Renters provides sustainability advice for those living within the restrictions of rental property through our website, workshops, articles and much more! |

| 21 March | Sun | GLORIANA presents Górecki's "Miserere." Josquin Desprez: Missa Pange Lingua Francis Poulenc: Figure Humaine Henryk Górecki: Miserere Henryk Górecki composed his Miserere in 1981 as a protest against military intervention in the workings of the Polish Solidarity Movement. Sunday 21 March 2010 at 2:30pm. |

| 27 February | Sat | Cinema Voltaire is launched! A NEW HOME FOR
UNDERGROUND FILMS Lovers of underground, avant garde, and experimental cinema will have a new venue from Saturday 27th February when Cinema Voltaire holds its first screening at the Australian Centre Of Performing Arts (ACOPA) in North Melbourne’s Raglan Street. Cinema Voltaire is the brainchild of Lindsay Saddington, director of ACOPA, who said there was an obvious dearth of venues where underground, avant garde and experimental films could be seen. Set in a cabaret lounge environment, Cinema Voltaire aims to show cutting edge shorts and features from all over Australia and the world, sometimes teamed with live performances. The aim is to have one curated program every second month from February. The first film will be David King’s underground quasi-sci fi feature film, PURGE, praised by Dutch film critic Ton van Rooij as “unconventional”, “confronting”, and “visually arresting”. The film is unclassified so only those over 18 can attend. Tickets will be $12 or $8 concession with all proceeds being used to set up and run future screening programs. A fully-licensed bar also operates at the venue. Cinema Voltaire is seeking quality underground, avant garde, and experimental films for future screenings. Filmmakers and those wanting more information about screenings can contact Lindsay Saddington on 9326 9094 or via admin@acopa.com.au The first screening will be on Saturday 27 February at 8pm. Address is 14 Raglan Street, North Melbourne. |
