| 14 December | Thu | THE BOITE PRESENTS PEACE CHILD at the BMW
EDGE THEATRE, FEDERATION SQUARE.
THURSDAY 14 DECEMBER at 7PM Special guests include - Tickets - $30 available at TICKETMASTER Available at the door from 6pm. In some Papuan tribes the exchange of a child between warring parties means peace, because the risk of wounding your own flesh and blood during another fight is too high. The child, who thereafter lives with the old enemy, is known as a peace child. TUMBUNA (THE ANCESTORS) is an indigenous performance troupe formed in 1987 to revitalise the memory of Papuan ancestors and heroes and reinvigorate the moral fabric they wove. TUMBUNA tells the story of 'Peace Child' through dance, drumming, body paint, and extraordinary harmonies. The group has toured extensively in Asia and New Guinea. The debut in Australia was to be held at the BMW Edge Theatre as a prelude to the Earth Festival in Japan in July 2007. The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs have rejected visa applications from the West Papuan performers invited to Melbourne to perform Peace Child at a Boite Concert in BMW Edge Theatre on Thursday 14 December 2006. Boite director, Roger King, said 'DIMA's rejection notice claimed the West Papuan artists were unable to demonstrate 'sufficient incentive to return to Indonesia in terms of property, assets, permanent employment, and no ties to your homeland' - a clear indication of how little they comprehend the artists' relationship with their land as the source and inspiration for their performance. MS FUJIMOTO will arrive at FEDERATION SQUARE just before the concert on 14 December in a flotilla of boats carrying the sponsors and a special indigenous wood sculpture carved especially for the 'Peace Child' concert. The Artists: Yoko Fujimoto is a founding member of KODO, the internationally acclaimed Japanese drumming group and the group's principal vocalist. She has arrived in Australia and is preparing a program that draws on Japan's occupation of New Guinea during World War II for inspiration. Yoko offers a re-interpretation of traditional pieces from both cultures into exciting new works devised during the first-ever artistic collaboration between performance artists from Japan and West Papua. In the concert she will be supported by local artists including two extraordinary West Papuan dancers, plus Kavisha Mazzella, Arnold Zable, Stephen Taberner and members of the Melbourne Millennium Chorus. 'Viva La Visa' is a dramatic and athletic interpretation of betrayal and endurance in dance, drumming, body design, and extraordinary Melanesian harmonies. http://www.boite.asn.au/ |

| 1 July | Sat | 1812 THEATRE COMPANY performs "SEX, DRUGS & RICK
'N' NOEL" by David Tristram.
"This is the funny, bitter-sweet story of two mature students studying history, and a whole lot else, at university. The play centres on Rick, in his mid-forties, who makes drastic changes in his boring life and bravely heads off to university. And that’s when the fun starts. Rick learns from his new friend Noel the important things in student life, such as how to fry an egg on an iron, but actually getting a degree doesn’t seem to be on Noel’s agenda, so how is Rick to achieve his dearly held goal? Brilliantly written, and with lots of laugh-out-loud gags, means that this comedy from the author of Forget-me-Knot is touching, entertaining and exhilarating." Tickets sold by mail to subscribers. | 15-16 July | Sat to Sun | A SONGWRITING WEEKEND AT VENUS BAY WITH BRUCE WATSON. Satirical, funny, moving, sometimes politically motivated, insightful but always a pure entertainment. Bruce has a keen sense of the absurdities of life. Nothing is sacred, but many things are precious. His serious songs are both moving and challenging, and he is not afraid to tackle the hard issues. Bruce is an award winning songwriter and performer who will get you laughing and thinking. The Berwick and District folk club is hosting a song writing weekend with Bruce Watson. The course will be flexible (there are core topics, but content will be adapted to participants' interests and needs) and will be held at Venus Bay, which is not too far from Melbourne. Directions will be given after enrolment. Places on the course are strictly limited to 10-12 participants. Cost of the course is Badfolk Members $60.00 - Others $75.00 This cost will include some meals (breakfasts and Saturday lunch) and accommodation (may be crowded) at the venue. | 17 June | Sat | 1812 THEATRE COMPANY performs "SEX, DRUGS & RICK
(Subscription costs $5 per household per year.) Tickets are $20 each. WHERE: Theatre, 3 Rose Street, Upper Ferntree Gully, Vic. 3156. WHEN: 8:30PM sharp. | 19 May | Fri | BERWICK AND DISTRICT FOLK CLUB present CHRISTINA
GREEN and BILL DETTMER.
Christina Green is
an accomplished singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Her early influences and inspirations to write include Canadian folk duo Kate and Anna McGarrigle and singer-songwriter Ferron, as well as UK folk guitarist John Renbourn. From the late 80s onwards Christina has been drawn to the work of
songwriters focusing on social issues, and since that time an ongoing Christina's songs combine lyric excellence and breadth in both musical style and subject matter. She writes with an observant and compassionate approach about people everywhere dealing with issues such as the effects of globalisation, environment damage and the struggle for freedom, political and economic stability. Her sets also include many personal songs and songs with a comic touch that are always enjoyed by audiences. In 2005 Christina toured Canada, performing in Montreal, Ontario and British Columbia. In 2006 she has begun work on a new CD and is performing regularly around Melbourne. AND Bill Dettmer: This excerpt from Tommy Emmanuel’s manager of 10 years - "The world is full of guitarists, singers, poets and raconteurs ... many who label themselves 'entertainers'. But rarely do I come across an artist who can truly claim to be just that ... a real (in this case meaning honest) entertainer. In fact to just listen to a CD or tape by Bill Dettmer means you only get part of the picture. I had to sit in an audience at a Bill Dettmer concert to fully appreciate his talent. "Drawing from a rich tapestry of experiences, Bill somehow manages to pull them together and present commentaries on life in a way in which I believe, everyone can truly relate and empathize. Whether it is tragic or funny, an everyday occurrence or something really special, Bill has the gift of recreating the moment and sharing it with his audience. Everyone should experience a night with Bill Dettmer." WHERE: Old Cheese factory, 34 Homestead Road, Berwick 3806. WHEN: Doors open 7:30PM. Music starts 8:00PM. | 17 March | Fri | BERWICK AND DISTRICT FOLK CLUB. If you enjoy powerful acoustic music, don't miss the sensational MUNDY-TURNER from the UK. From one of the most vibrant live acts on the scene, you can expect soaring harmonies, spine-tingling songs, sizzling arrangements on fiddle, acoustic guitar, piano & percussion. All this is spiced with story-telling and anecdotes, poignant, perceptive and comic. Cath Mundy & Jay Turner have played as support to The Corrs, Rolf Harris and recently scored great success when they toured with British folk-rock legends Fairport Convention on their 2004 Winter Tour. Formed in Australia in 1995, once based in both Cairns and Brisbane, the duo has been based in Derbyshire, England for the past 3 years. Singer-songwriter Jay TURNER, originally from the UK and now also an adopted Aussie, is a versatile acoustic guitarist, alternately delicate and driving. Cath MUNDY, of Brisbane, plays lyrical violin & piano in a cross between classical, folk and blues-rock styles. Both are fine songwriters and have singing voices which can "veer from the soaringly passionate to the tender and subtle" (The Living Tradition, UK). Their songwriting partnership has produced work of breathtaking power and beauty, influenced by a melting pot of musical styles, from contemporary & traditional folk to gospel, blues, classical, rock-pop & acappella, and driven by a deep commitment to social justice and human rights. MUNDY-TURNER have created a sound & style that is potently and most emphatically their own. WHERE: Old Cheese factory, 34 Homestead Road, Berwick 3806. WHEN: Doors open 7:30PM. Music starts 8:00PM.
