5-6 December Wed to Thu Demanding the Impossible: The Third Australian Conference on Utopia, Dystopia and Science Fiction. 5th - 6th December 2007

A conference organised by the Centre for Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies at Monash University.

Keynote Speakers:

TERRY EAGLETON
Professor of Cultural Theory and John Rylands Fellow at the University of Manchester.

TOM MOYLAN
Glucksman Professor of Contemporary Writing and Director of the Ralahine Center for Utopian Studies, University of Limerick.

LYMAN TOWER SARGENT
Professor Emeritus of Political Science, University of Missouri, St. Louis, and Visiting Fellow, Mansfield College, University of Oxford.

LUCY SUSSEX
Distinguished Australian science fiction writer and author of A Tour
Guide in Utopia.

Other Speakers will include:
Andrew Benjamin (Professor of Critical Theory, CCLCS), Roland Boer (Associate Professor, CCLCS), Ian Buchanan (Professor of Critical Theory, Cardiff University), Verity Burgmann (Professor of Politics, University of Melbourne), Jacqueline Dutton (Senior Lecturer in French, University of Melbourne), Andrew Milner (Professor of Cultural Studies, CCLCS), Chris Palmer (Head of English, La Trobe University), Kate Rigby (Associate Professor, CCLCS).

In December 2001 the University of Tasmania hosted a successful conference around the theme of Antipodean Utopias. In December 2005, Monash University hosted a second conference, around the theme of Imagining the Future, to mark the long-awaited publication of
Archaeologies of the Future, Fredric Jameson's full-length monograph on utopia and science fiction. In all, there were something like 90 papers presented to this conference, including one by Jameson himself. This third conference will return to the question of how we imagine the future and whether such imaginings remain open to the unforeseeable. Jameson famously concludes that utopia is 'a meditation on the impossible, on the unrealizable in its own right'. Hopefully, the conference will play some small part in prompting similar such meditations on the impossible.

Its keynote speakers will be: Terry Eagleton, whose recent publications include After Theory, Sweet Violence and Holy Terror; Tom Moylan, author of Demand the Impossible and Scraps of the Untainted Sky; Lyman Tower Sargent, founding editor of Utopian Studies and co-editor of The Utopia Reader; and Lucy Sussex, author of A Tour Guide to Utopia.

The conference invites papers from scholars, writers and others
interested in utopia, dystopia and science fiction.

Conference Abstracts:

Abstracts (approx. 100-150 words) should be sent by 31 October 2007 by e-mail to Utopias@arts.monash.edu.au

or by post to:
Utopias3 Conference,
Centre for Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies,
Building 11,
Clayton campus,
Monash University,
Victoria 3800,
AUSTRALIA.

Conference Proceedings:
Refereed proceedings of the conference will be published electronically in the on-line journal Colloquy.

2-24 November Fri to Sat I Only Ever Liked You for Your Heart - an installation of new work by Jessie Angwin opens Friday 2 November 6pm at Kings ARI 1/171 King St., Melbourne deep in the heart of sex-for-sale land...
http://www.kingsartistrun.com.au/

Exhibition runs:
November 2-24, 2007.
Open 3-6pm Wed to Fri, 12-6pm Sat.

One year ago I developed a rash after shaving off my pubic hair for a lover who dumped me with the words, "I was never attracted to you physically or sexually. I only ever liked you for your heart."

The exhibition exposes Raunch Culture's inability to accommodate for female subjectivity by citing this confession as the catalyst for a new installation of video, paper cuts, neon and printed text. Each work is a document betraying the schism between the sexy and the sexual, the glamorous and the grotesque, the ideal and the real.

I Only Ever Liked You for Your Heart is a discourse on how to prevail, demonstrating that Raunch can be inverted with the strategy of personal resilience and that personal 'success' can be incited by very public failure.

STAR WARS - The Untold Tale.

Geelong. Can't move in this town without someone saying how cool Geelong is. We figured it out - it's because Rob Baard* spent five years creating a feature-length movie Star Wars - The Untold Tale, the very same movie being shown at the MSFC this very Friday night!

Entry is by donation: part of George Lucas's terms and conditions for this movie is that it remains non-profit. So don't look for it among the Big Earners such as Matrix Reload #5: Shrek vs the Pirates of the Caribbean.
But do look at it at the Club this Friday night.

It's 86 minutes duration means we start punctually at 9.00pm.

10 & 11 November Sat & Sun Lisa Miller performs at the Spiegletent.

Lisa Miller gets back in the tent.

The Famous Spiegeltent hardly needs an introduction by now. 1920s Belgian cabaret tent, mirrors, Marlene Dietrich, Stella Artois, yada yada.... suffice to say it's a rather good place to see a Lisa Miller concert.

Lisa is doing 2 Spiegelshows this year, on Saturday the 10th of November and Sunday the 11th of November. Both nights commence at the very civilised hour of 7 pm.

Naturally, being Spiegelshows, these will be very special nights, with a full complement of the finest backing musicians money can buy to be expected. We're talking mini-skirted harpists, smart-casual pedal steelists, the works. Possibly even a bow-tied grand pianist. Additionally, there is the very real prospect of the famous Lisa Miller Spiegeldress being brought out of its acid-free, vermin-proof enclosure - surely the last time this bejewelled relic of the Gatsby age can withstand the rigours of a 21st century rock'n'roll performance.

You can book tickets at any Ticketmaster outlet, call 1300 136 166, or...

The Day of the Triffids

From the novel by John Wyndham, Adapted by Shaun Prendergast. Directed by Janine Chugg.

Auditions will be held at Beaumaris Theatre, 82 Wells Rd Beaumaris on Saturday November 10th from 10.30am, and again on Monday November 12th from 7.30pm. No-one will be auditioned without booking a time. The season runs February 22nd to March 8th 2008.

A large cast is required for this thought-provoking and at times chilling drama that explores issues of particular relevance to our world today. There will be a doubling up of roles, so that most cast members will play specific roles as well as "extras".

Synopsis: On the night of a spectacular meteor shower viewed by all the world, Bill Masen is in hospital awaiting the removal of bandages from his eyes, recovering from a Triffid sting. The next morning he awakes to find he is one of the few left who can see. It is the end of the world as he knows it. He meets Josella Playton, another person who has retained her sight, and together they struggle to build a life together in a world where order and chaos, compassion for others and self-survival jostle for dominance – against a background of the ever-present threat of the lethal Triffids.

"Jekyll"

A good yarn, with some nice touches, 4 stars out of 5.

AS we all know, Jekyll is meant to be pronounced Gee-kill not Jek-ill. Will the BBC get it right? This and other questions will be answered this coming Friday night at the Melbourne Science Fiction Club film/TV discussion event.

[wikipedia snip follows]
Jekyll is a British television drama series produced by Hartswood Films and Stagescreen Productions for BBC One. It was created by Jeffrey Taylor and stars James Nesbitt as Tom Jackman, a modern-day descendant of Dr. Jekyll, who has recently begun transforming into a version of Mr. Hyde (also played by Nesbitt). He uses modern technology in an attempt to keep Hyde in check and the two for a while have a peaceful co-existence until it is revealed
that they are the key to a secret-organisation's one-hundred year old plot. The series is described by its creators as a sequel to the novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, rather than an adaptation of it, and the Robert Louis Stevenson tale is used within the series as a back story.

2 October Tue Fitzroy Shorts crosses the great divide!

Fitzroy Shorts brings short film aficionados another fine selection of films from the region with the last screening before the end of year 'THE FITZ' Awards to be held in December. Featuring the winner of a Palme d'Or Special Mention at this year's Cannes Film Festival. RUN a short film from New Zealand, directed by Mark Albiston is a beautifully observed tale of a Samoan brother and sister who live in fear of their overly protective father. The siblings have to rely on each other in order to teach their father that they can proudly stand on their own.

Australian director Sotiris Dounoukis brings us PUNCH. Punch is the most loved man in Paris reminisces about a time when he was loved by just one woman instead of a whole city. He longs for a similar love, but is it just his imagination,! or could he really leave the adoration of the people behind?

With his latest ambitious short film THE CHANGI MURALS, director Boo Junfeng from Singapore recreates the passion of a man behind these well known paintings and tries to give an account of how they came into being and were wrought from circumstances well beyond description. The film is set in 1963 when Stanley Warren revisits the site of his imprisonment. In an ordeal 20 years ago as a POW in Changi Prison, he suffered the double hardships of dysentery and cruel treatment by Japanese guards. Warren is charged with memories he would rather forget and struggling with an upwelling of emotions too dark and powerful to bear. At the same time he is haunted by that era’s extreme desolation and hopelessness, the darkest days and dragging months, locked-away years of his life. In short, he is a man on an inner mission, with scores unsettled.

10-13 October Wed to Sat BATS THEATRE COMPANY presents "LOTTERY."
What does tennis player Wayne Arthurs, a mafia boss, a telemarketing call centre, an industrial washer factory and an under-funded orphanage all have in common? Well, not much. But they all play an integral part in this new Australian play.

Basically 3-plays-in-1, Lottery takes a satirical look at the three winners of a Lotto super draw and what effects the money has on their life. Seen by many to be the ultimate answer, these three short stories show how a successful financial windfall, can bring all you deepest, darkest problems bubbling to the surface.

Consisting of a cast of nine, Lottery offers a unique acting opportunity, as each cast member plays a completely different role in each of the three plays.

Funny, sad, brutal and sometimes offensive, this uniquely suburban Australian play will certainly have some familiarity for everybody.

Lottery is performed as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

WHERE: The Polyglot Theatre, Cromwell Road, South Yarra.

WHEN: 10 October performance starts at 8:00PM.

Situation #3 - Steven McIntyre & Dirk de Bruyn
#3 in a series of cellular invasions situated between the analog and the digital. This collaboration re-inserts Steven McIntyre back into Melbourne after being installed in Monterey, Mexico for the last decade, and returns de Bruyn's experimental film practice back into visibility.

Ellipsis - Tim Webster
Tim will have a box. In that box will be an object. The box is long. There are different lighting setups in the box. The light will change. The object will move, slowly, from black to white. Black is about the object, white is about the shadows. Every now and then I will probably skitz out, but my object box is constant. We will see.

Tim's work crosses installation and performance and encompasses a range of diverse media, often brought together by video projection within a live performance context.

Conversation #1 - Sone [Keith Deverell and Corey Sans]
A conversation where more is said between the words, Conversation #1 investigates the hidden depths of awkward silences and cliched statements.

Sone's work is almost film, and nearly sound-scape, with narrative woven within the silent and the still. Utilising their own field recordings they construct each scene within the time-space of the performance.

The feast - Jon Pak
Follow the ebb and flow as two diners, and their waiter, serve and consume a feast of sonic intentions. This piece forms the next iteration of Jon's continuing interest in finding new interfaces for musical expression.

Greyspace
Greyspace is an audio visual laboratory run by Keith Deverell. This is the studio's first curated night of eclectic audio visual performers. Keith was introduced to Brightspace Gallery through his exhibition for his Masters of Design, held in June 2007.

OUTRE GALLERY exhibition "Tales of the Bunnyfish" by kozyndan opens!

'Uprising' by kozyndan

kozyndan is a Los Angeles-based team of artist/illustrators known for their digitally painted pencil drawings of contemporary urban cityscapes and surreal interior spaces. Comprised of husband and wife Dan and Kozue Kitchens, kozyndan creates both fine art and commercial projects, and has been showcased internationally to much critical acclaim.

The duo met in a painting class in college in the late 1990s. They began collaborating, and the result has been a series of personal works that often reflect their affection – and repulsion – for the rampant urban sprawl and technological overload that characterize everyday city life. Their detailed drawings portray realistic urban panoramas, which on closer inspection reveal often absurd scenarios. In one, for example, elderly Chinese women, armed only with dim-sum, stave off an aerial attack on San Francisco’s Chinatown, while in another, marauding day-glo bunnies take on Manhattan. According to Dan, the pair’s work portrays their “unease with and love of the modern world.”

Koznydan's other work includes album covers for Weezer, John mayer, Daedelus, Lyrics Born, and the Postal Service, as well as magazine illustrations for Colors, Tokion, Relax, Giant Robot, XLR8R, among others. They've also done commercial projects for RES Fest, Electronic Arts, Nike, Wieden+Kennedy and Idn, and they've produced an array of products featuring their artwork, including posters, books (their first, Urban Myths, was recently published by early supporters Giant Robot) and t-shirts. The couple has also exhibited work in galleries from Los Angeles to Toronto to London.

Duruflé Requiem

Completed in 1947 and dedicated to the memory of his father, Maurice Duruflé's Requiem is his largest and most important work. The beauty and timelessness of the music comes from the composer's extensive use of Gregorian plainsong in the work, clothing it in sensuous and impressionistic harmonies. Originally scored for full orchestra, Duruflé made a virtuoso transcription for organ and this will be performed by Jonathan Bradley on Trinity College Chapel's Jones Grand Organ. Also music by Pérotin, Dufay, Ockeghem, a rare performance of Frank Martin's colourful Songs of Ariel and Francis Poulenc's Un soir de neige. This concert is being recorded by ABC Classic FM.

"A Nocturne"
featuring Alex Spears and Vanessa de Largie - a film by Bill Mousoulis.

Opening Night, MELBOURNE UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL. Thursday, September 20, at 7:00 pm.

Venue: The Toff in Town. Level 2, Curtin House, 252 Swanston St, Melbourne.

Admission cost: $15. enquiries - info@muff.com.au (no phone bookings).

"The new feature from revered underground filmmaker Bill Mousoulis is right up MUFF's alley, hence our Opening Night Guernsey. It is a moody, violent and gory Vampire flick infused with Mousoulis' own reflective time-eschewing style. It could be compared to Abel Ferrara's The Addiction, but A Nocturne takes on a feel and atmosphere all of its own. The film references other classic horror genres and characters like zombie films and American Psycho, while creating one of the best Aussie Vampire flicks yet produced, up there with Thirst and, dare I say it, my own and Jon Hewitt’s humble Bloodlust. A great cast and haunting score make the film a must see event for lovers of Indy cinema everywhere!" (written by Richard Wolstencroft, MUFF director)

Wesley Anne
Thursday September 27
with Scarlett Cook and Nervous Doll Dancing
A special intimate (mostly) acoustic show in the beautiful surrounds of The Wesley Anne. Wesley Anne started life as a church in the 19th century before becoming a bar and live music venue. Today it still resembles a nice old gothic church... only this church serves great food, has quality beer on tap and has good wine... not the sacremental crap they usually have in churches!

In the last 12 months Melbourne shows have been rather rare for us and when they do occur they've usually been with unique lineups for each one... this gig is no exception : we will be joined by Melisa Collins (The Restless, Season, Delores etc) on violin and Pete McKeown (Heligoland, Marionettes, Becus) on Fender VI who will be adding his trademark reverb-drenched melancholic swirls on this unique baritone guitar. Also, you may recall that for our ~An Inexact Science~ launch at NSC last year we were joined by ~The Inexact Choir~... well, this time we will be joined by The Incomplete Choir... that is we have half of the choir this time, that half being Megan Price and Pauline Noble.

Also appearing are dark pianist/vocalist Scarlett Cook (who we played with in Adelaide earlier this year before she moved to Melbourne) and Nervous Doll Dancing (solo cello treated with electronics by Francesca Mountfort).

Paper/Scissors/Rock is a project that uses the simple game of its namesake to explore materiality and the associative connotations of the terms within contemporary arts practice. Twelve Melbourne-based artists have been selected to participate in the project, either self-selecting existing works or creating new works for the occasion of this exhibition. The individual projects will be presented in a series of four triptychs throughout the gallery, which may or may not be definitively related to the individual terms paper, scissors or rock. Indeed, some of the projects may incorporate aspects of all three terms, blurring the definitive hierarchies established within the game. In this way, Paper/Scissors/Rock subsumes the playfulness of the game, while dispensing with the element of competition, creating a project that relies upon the inherent chance within the game and blurring its elements of distinction.

Paper/Scissors/Rock is a West Space Project curated by the Programming Committee.

VIDEO SCREENING - "EUREKA"

We continue our series of really cool, offbeat, fun items at the Melbourne Science Fiction Club, and invite all you hoopy froods to join us this Friday night.

Eureka takes place in a secret town of that name inhabited entirely by the best minds in the United States. After World War II ended, Albert Einstein realized that the future belonged to science. Given the close call with the deployment of the atomic bomb, the U.S. government decided it could not risk being surpassed by other nations.

In the fifty years since the town's founding, its residents are responsible, directly or indirectly, for almost every leap in the natural sciences known to humanity. However, with experimentation inevitably comes failure, and over fifty years' worth of trial and error they have had a number of experiments go awry.

6 & 7 July Fri & Sat BEAUMARIS THEATRE PRESENTATION.
"Deathtrap" will be performed as Anonymous Theatre on Saturday June 30th. Each actor will rehearse individually with the director and will not know who else is in the cast until the same time that the audience does – when the curtain opens on June 30th. They will then be able to rehearse together during the next week, and perform again on Friday July 6th and Saturday July 7th. All performances will be at 8pm. The director, Darius Pierce, is in Melbourne for two months only to direct this play. Darius is one of the creators of Anonymous Theatre, from Portland, Oregon in the US.

"Deathtrap" is set in the isolated New England home of thriller playwright Sydney Bruhl. The action centres around the play "Deathtrap", a new thriller by unknown dramatist Clifford Anderson which he has sent to Sydney for comment – or has he? The play takes many unexpected twists and turns. Helga ten Dorp does her best to warn of the disquieting vibrations she is sensing, but it is too late for some. To reveal more would be to ruin the suspense, which will certainly be emphasised by the Anonymous Theatre format.

12 & 13 July Thu & Fri BEAUMARIS THEATRE presents "No Way Out" by Jean-Paul Sartre. (Directed by Michael McManus.)
"No Way Out" is a one act play that will be performed at Beaumaris Theatre for two nights only. It is a journey into Jean-Paul Sartre's hell, though it is not the
traditional hell with demons and hot pokers. Instead Sartre's hell is a small room with just three people - Garcin, Inez and Estelle - set to spend the rest of eternity together, each being the others' personal torturer. The play was originally written in just two weeks by Sartre as a short one act play so that the French public could still go out to the theatre during the Nazi occupation. It is full of Sartrean existential themes that are as important today as they were then. Essentially we see the three characters enter into hell, and gradually they begin to slowly extract the others' reason for being in hell. We see the characters slowly reveal more of their true selves in response to the others' presence. This play is where the famous Sartre quote "Hell is other people" comes from. We see Sartre explore this statement, leaving at the end a far more chilling idea that we are all stuck in our own hell of other people and that we all truly have "No Way Out".

WHERE: Beaumaris Theatre, 82 Wells Road, Beaumaris 3193. (Melway 86 G6).

WHEN: From 8PM.

COST:
Thursday July 12th – Adults $18, all other tickets $15.

As guests arrive to the party the tale of what has occurred gets a little out of hand. It is a hilarious, side-splitting, farce you won’t want to miss.

Ron The Zookeeper screens at Fitzroy Shorts in June!

Ron the Zookeeper, by Darcy Prendergast

Ron the Zookeeper, created by Melbourne-based animator Darcy Prendergast, has been selected for screening at the Annecy Festival in June. Annecy is the number one international competitive festival, and for over 45 years the town has been showing off the very best in animation during six days of festivities. Fitzroy Shorts is proud to be screening Ron the Zookeeper in June.

Prendergast's film is one of six Australian films selected for this prestigious French festival, and to be selected at the age of 21 is a significant achievement for the young filmmaker. Darcy Prendergast's film, Ron The Zookeeper (2007), is a short clay animation about a panda called Sushi, and a zoo keeper who is assigned the unenviable task of collecting the panda's sperm. Sushi is the last male grey panda left in the entire world, and Ron the Zookeeper is unwillingly sent in to do the dirty work. His task is to ensure the survival of the species by retrieving a sperm sample from the ageing bear. Ron the Zookeeper is Prendergast's third film. His first two films, Off The Rails (2004) and Repugnant (2005), received acclaim at festivals in Australia and abroad.

From his humble beginnings drawing on the living room walls, to entertaining mates in art class with his cheeky and often R-rated clay creations, Darcy Prendergast's skills have grown enormously. Inspired greatly by the work of Jim Henson, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Dave Williams and Matt Lucas, Prendergast mixes a gritty animated style with a twisted sense of humour to form a juggernaut of entertainment and controversy. Darcy is currently working at the ABC as an animator.

23 June Sat OUTRE GALLERY presents: Live From Detroit: Glenn Barr "No Means Yes"
Solo Exhibition of Original Artworks and Limited Edition Prints.

'No Means Yes' - Glenn Barr

Outré Gallery is proud to be hosting a full-scale exhibition by one of our most popular advocates of the urban subculture and noir vision, a genre sometimes referred to as Pop Surrealism. Glenn Barr's work blends his own brand of gritty pop imagery from trash culture to a mid-century wasteland aesthetic. His brooding apocalyptic city-scape vignettes of moral ruin still manages to embrace a visual satire of humour and pathos. All this and a stylistic nod from his underground comics and animation days thrown into the mix.

His work mirrors disillusioned burlesque culture, heartbroken souls and the surreal bleak yet tantalizing side of an after hours dive. And on top of all this his skill as a draftsman and painter are ever inspiring.

"No Means Yes" - while at once pointing to the uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous side of sexual politics – also signals the way things are not always as they appear.

Glenn Barr will be out from hometown Detroit to meet and greet at his exhibitions in both Melbourne and Sydney.

From 23 June 2007, for 3 weeks.

BEAUMARIS THEATRE "ANONYMOUS THEATRE" PRESENTATION.

WHERE: Beaumaris Theatre, 82 Wells Road, Beaumaris 3193. (Melway 86 G6).

WHEN: From 8PM.

COST:
Anon Theatre night - all tickets $25.

2 May Wed FITZROY SHORTS!

AFI Award winning animation "GARGOYLE" screens at Fitzroy Shorts!

Still from 'Gargoyle'

Writer/director/animator Michael Cusack brings to Fitzroy Shorts his AFI award winning animation GARGOYLE. "It's fantastic that Gargoyle has been recognised by the AFIs. Gargoyle was considered something of a risk for me. Animation is always a labour of love, but as a work of personal expression, Gargoyle was an attempt to make something that would resonate and make people feel differently about animation. Of course, you always hope that an audience will respond, but it's still a terrific surprise to be recognised in this way."

A poetic work of dramatic fantasy, Gargoyle was a departure for Cusack, who is well known for his crowd-pleasing comedies.

Gargoyle came more from a place of personal inspiration. There's significant expense involved with any self-funded short, and the production timeline involved with animation means that choice of material is important. In making this kind of mood-oriented drama, I was hopeful that people would emerge with an emotional response, in a way that perhaps isn't always expected these days from the medium. It seems that this has been the case — and that's very rewarding."

Michael Cusack is a creative force behind production company Anifex. Anifex works almost exclusively in traditional stop-motion frame-by-frame animation on 35mm motion picture film.

Gargoyle was completed over a 3 year period with 13,560 individual frames needed to capture the action of the characters. Each frame required the animators to move the characters by hand - a painstaking process that has been recognised by the AFI.

1 April Sun BEAUMARIS THEATRE AUDITIONS.
Beaumaris Theatre is auditioning for this Jean-Paul Satre one act play. Directed by Michael McManus, the play will be performed at Beaumaris Theatre, 82 Wells Rd Beaumaris on Friday July 13th, and then at two One Act Play Festivals on Saturday July 14th and Sunday July 15th, and at a University during the following week. Actors must be available for all performances.

"No Exit" is a journey into Jean-Paul Sartre's hell, though it is not the traditional hell with demons and hot pokers. We see the characters slowly reveal more of their true selves in response to the others’ presence. This play is where the famous Sartre quote "Hell is other people" comes from. We see Sartre explore this statement, leaving at the end a far more chilling idea that we are all stuck in our own hell of other people and that we all truly have "No Exit".

We require actors for the following roles:

Valet – Small role. Indeterminate age or sex.

Garcin – Male, anywhere from 25 to 50's in age.

Inez – Female, 30 plus.

Estelle – Female, 18 to late 20's.

Auditions will be held at the theatre on Sunday April 1st from 2pm. No-one will be auditioned without having booked. For all details and to book an audition please phone Director Michael McManus on 0433 149 321.

Please see our website www.beaumaristheatre.com.au for more information about Beaumaris Theatre.

Sunday 22 April 2007, 12 noon to 4pm.

Where: Myer Music Bowl, Alexandra Gardens

Join us for a day of fun at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, one of Melbourne's landmark venues. Unions and community groups will come together to call for equity and justice for working families. The day will feature music, comedy, kid's shows and short speeches. Most importantly it will be an opportunity to stand together against the Howard Government and demand a better deal for families.

Working families are amongst those hardest hit by the Howard Government IR laws. Since the introduction of the work laws real wages have dropped by 0.6% overall with women and low income workers even more harshly impacted.

Event details including maps and directions to the venue are available here.

VEND : directed by Natasha Gray

After taking out the top prize for Best Short Film at the 23rd Annual St Kilda Film Festival in 2006, VEND has impressed local and international audiences. The first short film from producer/director team Natasha Gray and James Findlay, VEND was produced with assistance from the NSW Film & Television Office's Young Filmmakers Fund, a scheme designed to provide aspiring filmmakers under the age of 30 with the opportunity and finance to bring their vision to life. What or who operates a soft-drink vending machine? VEND is a post-modern, sci-fi-fantasy about opportunity, freedom and dispensing with reality whist dispensing soft drink. Simple and stylish, VEND is a beautifully told story that will make you stop and think before you put your money into a vending machine next time. 23 March Fri OUTRE GALLERY.
First day of the solo exhibition "CITY FOLK" by world renowned artist, illustrator, toy designer and storyteller Nathan Jurevicius.

Nathan is the Australian creator of the cult of Scarygirl; the cute but slightly deformed little girl who was abandoned late one night and is later found and brought up by a friendly octopus and guided by a mystic rabbit. Her quest to find her origins is full of amazing encounters and fantastic characters.

'Treehouse' by Nathan Jurevicius

In this inspiring new show, which moves on a tangent in the ScaryGirl narrative, Nathan will focus on various aspects of the city that Scarygirl finds herself within. Things such as the secret, inner workings of city life; Chihoohoo's club; cityscapes from a distance and up close. There will be a large mix of mediums including original pen and ink drawings, paintings, large format canvas prints PLUS the Australian debut of the new City Folk blind box series with Kidrobot. These amazing, creatively conjured small vinyl toys are part of the larger cult of collectible designer figures produced in limited quantities by artists and designers.

"A most endearing mix of spooky tales, magical creatures, folk incarnations and plain good fun."

The Boîte presents a workshop with Singer & Voice Teacher
Frankie Armstrong
"The Voices of the Archetypes of Myth"

Saturday 3rd - Monday 5th (10am - 5.30pm) in beautiful Daylesford, Victoria.

For anyone interested in exploring their voices, this 3-day intensive workshop is suitable for all levels of experience.

Book early - Limited to 18 participants only!

Intensive Voice Course: The Voices of the Archetypes of Myth:
This intensive course will use Archetypes as a tool for each person to discover/uncover and experiment with whatever they find of value. The course will start with relaxation and body and voice warming up. Participants will then be guided through images and stories, and given tasks to explore as the mythic figure, allowing each person to find for him/herself the vocal qualities, and to improvise with these. Some examples of the figures from myth that may be explored are the Mother, the Trickster, the Huntress, the Devil, the Child, the Crone and the Initiator. Each figure needs specific preparation to help participants to feel their way into the physical and vocal qualities.

Background:
The Archetype workshops developed initially from Frankie’s work with theatre director & teacher John Wright. His work with the Archetypes used Mask and Movement to encourage students to access the "essence" - the qualities of figures that inhabit myth, folk tale and ballad. In 1987 John and Frankie began collaborating to incorporate the voice and song into this approach.

Nigel Jamiesion, currently Director of Australian theatre company Legs On The Wall, and director of the very powerful theatre piece about David Hicks' incarceration staged at the Malthouse, also studied the Archetype work and he and Frankie also created a teaching partnership.

From these collaborations, Frankie developed her own form of the work emphasising movement, imagination and story to release a wide range of vocal qualities and expression.

Who are the Workshops For?
These workshops can be for anyone (aged 18 or over) willing to open herself or himself whole-heartedly to such exploration. Participants do not need to be able to sing in the orthodox sense, but do need to have the confidence to let their voices out freely, and follow where their bodies and imaginations take them.

For singers and actors it can enrich their repertoire and help them access a wider expressive and vocal range of possibilities for characterisation and interpretation. Even for participants without this professional interest, it may open them up to new and intriguing facets of themselves. The workshop is very accessible, and is suitable for people who have never done anything similar before.

About Frankie Armstrong...
Since 1975, Frankie has been running voice workshops in Britain, Europe, North America and Australia. She pioneered Voice Work based on traditional styles of singing, initially influenced by the North American singer and folk song collector Ethel Raim. The workshops are for singers and non-singers alike - in fact, the aim is to do away with this distinction - and are inspired by cultures where everyone sings as naturally as they talk. The workshops offer the opportunity for people to explore and enjoy using their voices in an easygoing, supportive atmosphere.

For further information on Frankie’s CDs visit: http://www.harbourtownrecords.com/armstrong.html

31 January Wed SHORT CUTS IN ST KILDA.
Launching Short Cuts @ Big Mouth in 2007 is acclaimed International filmmaker, Royston Tan’s short film CUT. His debut feature was so brutally decimated by the Singapore censors that he fought back with a gleeful anti-Censorship protest short musical entitled CUT, which is currently banned in Singapore. The chorus line of the film is a Who's Who of the city-state’s last remaining freethinkers. Winner of the prestigious Canal+Award at the 2005 Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival.

Also screening at Short Cuts @ Big Mouth is Tropfest finalist FISHY, winner of the Best Editing award this year. Directed by Dale Sidney, a commercial director, it was his first entry into Tropfest. Returning to Australia after working at the BBC, he wrote FISHY based on a persistent thought he could not erase.
