GEMMA JONES.
"I paint celebratory, positive, bold, often nostalgic images of women and
girls.
"They are never paintings of famous people nor even of people I know, maybe they aren't even portraits. They are mostly taken from tiny, un-noticed pieces of vintage pop-culture - an ad, a brochure, an illustration, an old dress pattern. The girls are hence not anyone in particular and at the same time a single image can at once be a thousand anonymous, everyday girls into which the viewer can project themselves.
"The process of painting is itself important ... the works as images could much easily be produced as silkscreens or prints (and are often mistaken as such), but the investment of meditative time and the touch of the brush are important. The inconsistency of surface texture which at first glance seems incredibly flat is tied up in this process.
"My work revolves around a play with the mass produced image - reviving and focusing in on a fragment or a moment that is easily dismissed, discarded or forgotten within the bombardment of commercial culture. I like the idea of emptying the image of its original purpose or intent. An image or a face can suddenly be re-born just like that."

PHILIP BROPHY.
After a series of Super 8 shorts with Tsk-Tsk-Tsk in the early 1980s, and
the experimental short feature Salt, Saliva, Sperm & Sweat in 1988,
Philip Brophy made his feature directorial debut with Body Melt in 1993
which was funded by the Australian Film Commission & Film Victoria.
He has scored and sound-designed most of his films, and has designed the sound and composed music for many short films. He started and helps run the Cinesonic International Conference on Film Scores & Sound Design which is held annually in Melbourne, and has edited three books from the conference which have been published by the Australian Film TV & Radio School.
Having created the Soundtrack stream in Media Arts at RMIT, Melbourne, he continues to lecture and present on film sound and music internationally.
As a writer and speaker on film, Philip Brophy specializes in three distinct areas: (i) horror, sex & exploitation; (ii) film sound & music; and (iii) Japanese animation. He has had work published internationally. His most recent book is 100 Modern Soundtracks for the British Film Institute, London. His forthcoming book is 100 Anime also for the BFI.

NIGEL BUESST.
Nigel was born in Melbourne in 1938. After graduating from Melbourne University
in 1960, Nigel Buesst sought work in the British film industry. He worked
at Shepperton Studios as an assistant editor and on various other freelance
assignments before returning to Melbourne in 1962 to work for the ABC
at Ripponlea. Since then he’s worked as a film editor, cameraman,
sound recordist, producer and director. He was particularly active in
the 1960s
Carlton scene - as explored in his recently completed documentary Carlton
+ Godard = Cinema.
He spent thirteen years as a lecturer in the Swinburne Film and Television Department and five years as Director of the St Kilda Film Festival. He currently operates a small video editing establishment in North Carlton, the Sunrise Picture Co., and retains an undiminished enthusiasm for film in all its forms.
Nigel Buesst started out with a biopic about Squizzy Taylor and has returned to the form on several occasions, fascinated perhaps by the excitement and variety of other people’s lives. Recent subjects have been Benny Featherstone (a memorable bandleader of the 1930s), and Gerry Humphrys (the lead singer of The Loved Ones).
He has also worked on many short films, mostly on 16mm and in collaboration with others, and on a few feature films - the most ambitious being Compo in 1987. (This filmed version of a play by Abe Pogos was screened at the 1989 Melbourne International Film Festival) and was sold to the BBC.
Nigel’s main influences have been filmmakers who have achieved magic on minimal budgets, ranging from the British Free Cinema movement through to the French New Wave, to Andy Warhol in New York, Raul Ruiz, Werner Herzog, even the Dogma crowd. But he concedes that magic on any budget is alluring.

JAMES CLAYDEN.
James Clayden has been prolific in painting, sculpture, performance, theatre
and filmmaking since the early 1970s.
As a filmmaker, he had a productive first phase, through the '70s and '80s, making numerous Super 8 and 16mm films (some, like Corpse (1982) ambitious in scope), culminating in two stylistically different features - The Hour Before My Brother Dies (1986), an ABC telemovie written by Daniel Keene, and awarded a 'Rockie' for Best Telemovie at the BANFF TV Awards in Canada, and With Time to Kill (1987), a low-budget punk genre exercise, which screened at many festivals and got a worldwide video release. In the 1990s he worked on several feature-length projects.
Recently his two experimental projects, The Ghost Paintings 1-4 (2002-03) and HAMLET X (2003), have screened to critical acclaim at the Rotterdam, Buenos Aires and Melbourne International Film Festivals. He has recently completed a new feature, The Marey Project.

MATTHEW CLAYFIELD.
Matthew Clayfield grew up in Mount Gambier, South Australia, and attended
film school on the Gold Coast in 2004-05. He moved to Melbourne in February
2006 where he is currently undertaking postgraduate cinema studies at the
University of Melbourne.
Matthew's films have run the stylistic and thematic gamut, dealing with a
variety of subjects—from homesickness and masculinity to street art
and the internet—in a variety of ways—from three-way split screens
and handheld home video to contemplative long shots and cold Kubrickian modernism.
A number of reoccurring concerns have begun to emerge in his work since the
completion of Flushed (2004), including an ongoing inquiry into documentary,
reflexivity and self-representation, an increased engagement with politics
and history, and an emphasis on and commitment to the development of open
forms.

DIRK DE BRUYN.
Dirk de Bruyn has made numerous experimental, documentary and animation films
and videos over the last 30 years. He has continued to maintain a no-budget,
independent, self-funded focus for much of his work.
He was a founding member and past president of MIMA (Experimenta), been involved with Fringe Network and been a member of the Melbourne Super 8 Film Group. He has written about and curated various programs of film and video art internationally and written extensively about this area of arts practice. During the late '90s he was involved in an independent weekly screening program of film and video art at the Café Bohemio.
In the early '90s de Bruyn lived in Canada. Understanding Science, Rote Movie and Doubt were largely produced while teaching Animation at Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver.
He is currently teaching Animation and Digital Culture at Deakin University in Melbourne, Victoria (Burwood Campus).
His more recent Remmbr Me (12 min 2005 miniDv), Traum A Dream and GridGrid are part of a series of works exploring notions of representing trauma.

JARRAH GURRIE and GENEVIEVE BAILEY.
Genevieve and Jarrah met at the School of Creative Arts, Melbourne University
in 1999. They have been working together ever since having made several
short films together as well as organising multimedia events and screenings.
As well as being enticed by other peoples' true stories through docomentary making, their narrative films have been described as possessing docomentary qualities. Gen and Jarrah also enjoy making music videos and experimenting with different media in installation art projects.
Gen and Jarrah are self-sufficient filmmakers: acting as writers, directors, producers, editors and designers on most of their own productions.
Genevieve and Jarrah like to tell simple stories in not so simple ways. It is important to them to work with people from different age groups, experiences, backgrounds, sexualities and cultures.
Jarrah and Gen have chosen to work predominantly with digital video for various reasons, one being because it is so affordable.
(Jarrah is temporarily based in New York but Gen continues to work on documentary projects in Melbourne.)

DANDELION WINE.
"Dandelion Wine are an ethereal post-dreampop band that while based
in Melbourne Australia, inhabit a very different world. A world where the centuries
bleed into one another to create a seamless whole. A world where medieval
instruments collide headlong with electronic beats. A world where angelic vocals soar over waves of distorted guitars. A world where gentle
acoustic whispers sit alongside impassioned blasts of inner turmoil."

THE GREENMATICS.
From New Zealand, UK and Lithuania, Green, Gordo and Ant all stumbled across
each other in Melbourne, Australia in 2006 and are quite deliriously happy
with the direction their band is quickly heading.
In NZ 'The Greenmatics' (formerly known as 'Emerald Green') had 4 singles reach #1 in various Top 10 Radio countdowns. They received a nomination for 'Most Promising New Act' in the 2005 bNet Music Awards and had their #1 hit Wait No More remixed by Ryan Beehre (Minuit, Funkn Slocuts). They completed a tour of NZ, and their music videos were aired on Nationwide Television. With this success still fuelling her, Green (Mel Smith) took it to the next level. She headed for the big sunny/rainy city of Melbourne to see what she could accomplish.
In Melbourne, they formed a solid group, with a complete new band lineup.
Onstage, they acquired plenty of retro electro gear, and have been cutting
some seriously groundbreaking live shows.

LIMINAL.
The band formed in September 2001, and was off to a flying start when almost
immediately selected as joint winners of the HITZ-FM "Exposure" songwriting
competition. Following this auspicious beginning, Liminal has steadily
gained recognition in the band's hometown
of Melbourne, Australia, and collected a number of devoted fans along the
way. Noted for their live performance skills, the members of Liminal prefer
to focus their attention on painstakingly crafting,
arranging and refining songs until satisfied that each is structured to its
fullest advantage.
In July of 2004, Liminal were fortunate to gain funding from Arts Victoria, for a three-track demo recording. Liminal took the time to make this recording as good as possible... and the results surpassed expectations!
Liminal offer a fresh take on a classic formula - the traditional four-piece rock band. Their sound is modern but meaningful, moody yet invigorating, rock-oriented yet commercial. The group combine a love of completely different music genres into a sound that is accessible but completely unique.

WENDY RULE.
From her earlier days as a member of Melbourne rock band, The Howl
to her current status as independent Wiccan songstress, Wendy Rule has charted
a resolutely personal musical trajectory, absorbing elements of cabaret, folk & jazz
into her repertoire of catharsis & inner discovery etched upon a canvas
coloured by Mythology & the Underworld.
Guitar, Cello & Piano have featured prominently in her performances & recordings,
bringing to life songs that are often cinematic in grandeur & yet also
achingly feminine in vulnerability, her performances migrating from the ritual
to the theatrical. She presides as one of Australia’s unique talents,
deserving of a far wider audience than her current constituencies.

Matt Ridgway.
After ten years of playing in bands and seven of live and studio sound production, Matt began this new project in the summer of 2005 with the intention of creating a cohesive and individual sound from an expansive range of musical inspirations.
What emerged is a mix between retro-tinged indie-tronics and post-rock ambience, a blur of epic and intimate.
The Winterpark live show aims to create an ambience and mood that is rare among traditional indie-rock bands, whilst bringing an energy and emotional connection that is often lost in electronic music.
